The Emerging Markets Association (EMA), reception: December 8. 2005

The Emerging Markets Association (EMA), an MBA student organization, hosted a student/alumni cocktail reception on December 8 at the Topaz Hotel & Lounge in Washington, D.C. The event featured remarks by special guest speaker Tom Monahan, MBA ’95 and CEO of The Corporate Executive Board, and brought together several alumni and students.

Regional Leaders Summit: December 2, 2005

The Regional Leaders Summit was held on December 2, 2005. Invitations were extended to a total of 76 Regional Alumni Leaders, of whom 18 attended the day’s sessions at the Stern School. "The Regional Leaders Summit provided a unique opportunity for alumni leaders from around the world to reconnet with each other and the School," said Jeanne Marano, Executive Director. "We were delighted to have representation from all corners of the globe, including Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the U.K., and many cities here in the U.S."

Last month marked the first occasion where Regional Alumni Leaders came together from around the world to discuss best practices, exchange ideas and learn more about the strategic direction of the School. The Summit commenced with a breakfast allowing the Leaders to mingle with one another. The morning sessions included a presentation on the “Smart Classroom” by Yael Yankelev, Assistant Director for the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. Regional Leaders had the opportunity to experience first hand the multitude of technological enhancements unique to the Smart Classroom, a space made possible by a generous donor gift.

Regional Leaders from 18 cities around the world gather for a cocktail reception at the NYU Torch Club with Dean Russell S. Winer (second row, second from left) and Jeanne Marano, Executive Director of Alumni Affairs (second row, right).

The opening session, “State of the School / Alumni as Ambassadors,” featured Dean Thomas Cooley who provided an update on the School; Deputy Dean Russell Winer who discussed Stern’s brand strategy; and Associate Dean for Marketing and External Relations, Joanne Hvala, who addressed the topic of alumni as ambassadors.

Concluding the morning activities was session I, “Models for Success” that presented a Regional Leader panel featuring Lise Bardin, MBA ’98 and France Regional Contact, Peter Jansen, MBA ’99 and Westchester/Fairfield Regional Leader, Saul Orbach, MBA ’81 and Israel Co-Regional Leader, and Bo Shevchik, MBA ’87 and Washington, D.C. Regional Leader.

Each panelist spoke briefly about their respective groups and highlighted those areas that they found to be successful. “The Summit was a wonderful opportunity for the regional alumni associations to share best practices and build a sense of community,” Bo Shevchik commented. “At SternDC - the Washington DC Alumni Association - we focus on building a business networking community. I was glad to see that the other associations were doing this as well - we may all do different events but the objective is the same - building a business networking community."

The Regional Leaders broke for a working luncheon, where they again had the opportunity to network and share ideas with one another. The featured guest speaker was Susan Greenbaum, BS ’71 / MBA ’78 and Associate Dean for the Undergraduate College. Dean Greenbaum spoke about initiatives at the Undergraduate College and emphasized the value of the alumni community that Regional Leaders help to foster. She stressed the importance of inclusiveness for both undergraduate and graduate alumni with regard to regional program planning.

The afternoon sessions kicked-off with session II, “Campus Updates,” presenting an administrative panel featuring Gary Fraser, MBA ’92, Dean of Students and Associate Dean for MBA Student Affairs; Isser Gallogly, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing; Kerry Kruckel Gibbs, Assistant Dean of Development; and Anika Davis Pratt, Assistant Dean of MBA Admissions. Each panelist discussed their department and described areas of natural partnerships with Regional Leaders.

The closing session, “Tools and Tips” featured a SWAP demonstration and presentation by Jeanne Marano, Executive Director, and Sarah Marchitto, Assistant Director, on the ways in which Regional Leaders can work with Alumni Affairs and the tools available to assist them. There was great discussion among the Leaders regarding website features and available office resources. The Summit concluded with a cocktail reception and dinner at the NYU Torch Club.

“The Regional Leader Summit proved to be a valuable way to reconnect with the School, its academic programs and the individuals running the programs,” Ricardo Dadoo, MBA ’84 and Mexico Regional Leader expressed. “It was interesting to benchmark our efforts in Mexico with those of groups in other regions and countries. The support Alumni Affairs offers to provide organization and drive behind regional group initiatives is truly impressive.”

Hands on DC

On Saturday, May 7th, a team of 8 Stern alumni and their friends embarked on an assignment at Merritt Elementary School in North East DC. We worked side by side with alumni from Wake Forrest and the University of Wisconsin - for a total of about 35 volunteers at the elementary school.

Our project this year was to paint the walls of the main atrium - it was a major undertaking. This specific project was introduced last year to Hands on DC, but Hands on DC turned it down due to the size of the project. However, this year, the organizers decided to tackle the project, and we proved that it could be done. The teams worked great together and finished 80% before lunchtime. We had a hot dog cookout in the sun for lunch, and then went back to complete the job. A representative from the local councilman's office stopped by to show their appreciation, and we all enjoyed ice cream together at the end of the day, courtesy of Lee's Ice Cream.

Job well done! To those who participated, THANK YOU for coming out. Stay tuned for the next community service event!

Regards, Jit Saha Membership Chair, Stern DC

White House Tour

When: February 7, 2004
Where: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave
            Washington, DC

Did you know:

President James Polk (1845-49) was the first President to have his photograph taken?

President Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09) was not only the first President to ride in an automobile, but also the first President to travel outside the country when he visited Panama ?

President Franklin Roosevelt (1933-45) was the first President to ride in an airplane?

President George Washington gave the first State of the Union address (just called an annual message at that time) on Jan. 8, 1790 .  And in 1801, Thomas Jefferson started tradition of submitting the message in writing only, which went on for the next 112 years.  Woodrow Wilson revived the oral tradition before Congress in 1913?

If you went on the self-guided tour of the White House and grabbed a children's tour guide, you would know that and a lot more, including White House trivia about the big cheese Andrew Jackson let age for two years before citizens came in and ate it!

Nineteen NYU Stern alumni -- from the class of 1962 to 2001 -- braved the cold, early morning hours to take the White House tour of the East Wing.

After the tour, several alumni continued to get to know each other at an impromptu breakfast at the Willard Hotel .

If you have a tour or event idea,  contact events@sterndc.org

SternDC Kick-Off Dinner

Time: 6:30-8:30 pm

Where:
  B. Smith's (at Union Station)
First Ladies' Room (Yes, this is the name of an actual room at B. Smith - not a restroom!)
phone: 202-289-6188

SternDC is planning its first annual Kick-Off Dinner for local alumni.  Come out and join your fellow alumni for an elegant meal and an opportunity to see what is in store for SternDC in 2004.

Developing a Personal Marketing Plan

SternDC, The Office of Alumni Affairs and the Career Center for Working Professionals (CCWP) held a Professional Development Seminar and Evening on Networking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on November 20th. Here are a few impressions from the participants

What did you think overall?

"I thoroughly enjoyed the Professional Development Seminar November 20th at the National Press Club. The opportunity to get together with other NYU alumni and to hear of their experiences in the job market was valuable. Ms. Hernandez certainly showed us how to prepare a credible resume, and the job seekers present let us know that the interviewing process is really tough in today's market--not fun and games.

Personally, three people gave me tips on re-entering the workforce. They were sound suggestions which I appreciate and they could well bear fruit."

"It brought in more than the 'young grads' - we had an event that reached out to all alumni. It was well attended (over 30?) at the prestigious National Press Club. Liz Hernandez was great - she engaged the group, got participation, and I believe everyone got something out of it. It was a high quality event that I hope will be continued by us in the future."

"Nice presentation and loved the goodie bag."

Was material relevant to you / the Washington DC work environment?

"Yes."

"Not really relevant to me, but I am looking to start my own biz, not search for a job...search for clients, which is a job, but not interview and pitch to a company, which is what this was geared towards...In addition, virtually EVERYTHING Stern does is geared toward the financial services and consumer product marketing, neither or which I am interested in, and given that this is DC, I would think it would be less relevant here."

What other seminars/ gatherings would you like see in the future?

"I like the one-minute pitch idea as a theme...I also would like to have a Stern expert come talk to us about current events."

"Networking strategies

True networking gatherings (an evening planned where everyone rotates and talks to everyone else, perhaps with a two-minute time limit), both exclusively Stern and perhaps with other grad schools.

More high-profile behind-the-scenes tours (similar to our White House outing)"
