Message from the President of Stern DC Alumni

Hello,

It's hard to believe that another two months have passed. We've moved from a rainy spring to a, well, rainy summer. While things seem to be improving only slowly on the weather front, SternDC is moving steadily ahead in a number of areas:

  • First Annual DC-Area NYU Summer Picnic. We are working to bring together all regional NYU alumni-- not just Stern alumni-- for what we hope will be the beginning of an annual event. Keep Saturday, July 12th open for a day of fun, food, and networking. More details are provided below in our "Events" section.
  • www.sterndc.org is up and running, albeit currently in a simplified fashion. Our goal is to make SternDC.com the resource for all local alumni looking for information on SternDC, local events, and the local alumni network. A temporary homepage describing SternDC and listing contact information is in place until the larger site is complete. We hope to have an "Events" area up shortly, and a completely functional site, including membership and registration areas, within the next few months.
  • We are actively looking for web developers and designers to help us with this effort. If you can help, please drop us a line at XXXXXX
  • We are supporting the effort of two local alumni, Roslyn Doktor and Stephanie Abraham, to put together a pan-NYU alumni organization for the area. The effort is recent, but we will keep you posted as to the their progress.

As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.

All the best,
Seth Balsam

Chair, SternDC

Why start your own company?
Before business school, I had always worked for small entrepreneurial companies. After graduation, I tried the corporate route as a management consultant with Ernst & Young. This was an incredible experience, but after a few years I decided to leave and start a new company.

Some colleagues from E&Y, as well as a former professor from Stern, had been thinking about how to help mid size companies ($10 M - $200 M in revenue) effectively use information technology. It’s difficult for these companies to hire consultants and most have little in-house IT expertise. After seeing planning software in other disciplines, we decided to develop a “CIO-in-a-Box”.

It’s been a challenging first year -- as expected. The advice and support from the Stern Alumni community in DC has been invaluable. I’m truly honored to be part of such a group.
